Self improvement Thursday

With apologies to Richard Glover and 702 ABC Sydney!

Something new today: Our first Self Improvement Thursday

The challenge for self improvement Thursdays is to do one small thing that will make you feel good.  And I don't mean pleasurable good (what the ancient philosophers called 'Hedonism').  I mean satisfied, content, pleased with yourself-good (known as eudaimonism or 'flourishing').

Today's theme is procrastination.  It's not a challenge to procrastinate over something today. Most of us do that well every day.  It's a challenge to do something that you have been procrastinating over.  See what I did there?  I emphasised the do something because the only antidote to procrastination is action (despite what some of the clever self-help books will tell you).

What we don't want!

What we don't want!

I am going to make a phone call that I know will kick off a long exercise in logistics involving family members, small children, accommodation booking, arranging babysitting, travel, the whole catastrophe.  I've been avoiding it in the deluded hope that if I don't think about it it will somehow magically sort itself out.  But it won't and the longer I leave it, the more chaotic it will be as the deadline draws closer.  I want the sense of satisfaction that I know I'll get when I've got it all sorted out - even more than I want to avoid the whole debacle.  So today's the day I'm going to get started!

So what are you going to do today?  Could be big, could be small.  Could be pleasant, could be unpleasant.  It doesn't matter.  It's the doing that matters.  Then when it's done, reward yourself with something a little bit hedonistic.  Let's see if we can't make Thursday a great day for self-improvement!

A bit more of this instead.
