2018: I Want to Make You Think + 3 Simple Steps To Improve Your Day

This is my goal for 2018. I want to make you think.

If you’re on holiday right now you might resist this.  Who wants to think when they’re taking time off? But you don’t have to think right now. Take your time and when you’re ready, I’m here. We've got all year.

What do I want you to think about?

I want you to think about:

  • Your power
  • Your purpose
  • Your goals

I want you to think about:

  • Your actions
  • Your emotions
  • Your health

I want you to think about how you live your life. Are you living as you want to be?

What will be different this year? What do you want 2018 to mean? What do you want to learn? Achieve? And what do you want to feel?

Why is it important to ask these questions?

Because:

“When you know yourself, you are empowered. When you accept yourself you are invincible.”

If I have learnt anything in my 45 years, 17 of them as a psychologist, it’s that we grow when we pay attention. We learn when we pay attention. Our lives improve when we pay attention and yet so much of the time we don't pay attention.

We don’t pay attention to what we want. Instead we get caught up in what we think we should want.

We don’t pay attention to how we feel. We push those feelings aside, and try to cultivate the emotions we think we should feel.

We don’t think about where we want to be and how we want to live. We spend our days fulfilling our obligations to others, keeping busy and doing what we think we should be doing.

We don’t pay attention to the effect we have on others. Instead we expect them to change.


In 2018 I want to dose you up on the tools, tips and techniques you need to pay attention; to work out what you want from every day life, what you need for happiness and health, how you want to spend your hours, your days and your years.

I want to give you the skills and knowledge to achieve your goals, to be productive, to be fulfilled and to be content.

I want to share what I've learnt, what psychology knows and what science tells us works to know yourself, accept yourself and empower yourself.

Most of all I want to help you to find the courage to make the changes - personal and professional, big and small - that you know you need to make for life to be the best that it can be; to fulfil your potential.

While I'm working on putting these goodies together for you, you can make a start on your plans and goals for an outstanding 2018. This takes just a few moments of paying attention... 

Step 1: How do you want to feel?

Close your eyes and think for just a moment or two: ‘How do you want to feel in 2018?’ Happier? Stronger? Fitter? Satisfied? Loved? More secure? More capable? More relaxed?

Why do you want to feel that way? (Hint: It’s often because we’re not happy with the status quo)

Step 2: What simple action can you take?

What’s one thing you can do, starting today, to create that feeling in some small way? Do you need to exercise? Connect with someone? Get a task finished? Rest?

Step 3. Do it! (Remember, this only needs to be tiny thing. Go for a walk, make some notes in a notebook, call a friend, Google a topic or idea, take a nap. Bigger isn’t better. Change comes in tiny, consistent increments. The key is to keep paying attention and taking action.)
