Six months ago, on 25 August 2014 to be precise, I wrote and published my first blog post. My plan was to put stuff out there for six months to see what happened. If it worked, it worked. If not, I'd move on and try something else. I knew nothing about blogging except that it was writing and publishing online and it looked like fun.
I've been down this 'let's just have a go' path before. Thirteen years ago I decided to try my hand at self-employment. Same idea. 'I'll just give this a go until I need to get a proper job.' I knew nothing and had no plan. Thirteen years later and I've successfully avoided that 'proper job.'
Self employment has not been all beer and skittles. There are periods of intense self doubt, of limited cash flow, of pressured juggling of multiple projects, kids and life but it suits me through and through and I wouldn't give it up for a moment. My blogging journey has been the same, albeit somewhat shorter. It's still a day-by-day proposition (don't ask me what I'll write about next week, I don't know yet). There are days when the balance between belief and doubt tips precariously in doubt's direction. I'm not yet sure that I have a plan and I don't know what the future will bring.
What I do know is that I have learnt a huge amount which gives me a buzz every day ('love of learning' is one of my top five strengths). I have discovered an amazing community of bloggers who share their troubles and triumphs, support and knowledge. I love the challenge of social media, marketing, devising content that I think will be interesting and thought provoking and sharing the knowledge, wisdom and insight of others. So far, it's been a blast. I don't know where it's going but I know I need to keep doing it.
So as I set myself a new set of challenges at this six month anniversary I want to say thank you to each of you for reading, commenting, signing up and following along. At the beginning of the year I set myself a goal of writing a monthly newsletter for my lovely subscribers, and this is the first of these. My plan is to include additional content and some more personal thoughts, as well pretty, fun and useful things that I love and think you might too. Of course I'd love to hear from you too. What would you like to see here? Please let me know. You can email me at email@example.com.
